Preface to the Chinese Edition
This book is an introduction to the theory and technology of integrated optics and photonics for graduate students in electrical engineering, and for practicing engineers and scientists who wish to improve their understanding of the principles and applications of this continually growing field. This growth has been driven mainly by the vast expansion of worldwide telecommunications and data transmission networks, which has created a strong demand for inexpensive, yet efficient and reliable, integrated optic components. Nowhere has this growth been more apparent than in the Peoples Republic of China. As a result, I believe, there has been much interest in this book among the scientists and engineers of China, dating back to its first publication in 1982.
Over the years the book has been updated with new editions about every five years to include new areas of the general field of integrated optics and photonics that have gained prominence. A total of six new chapters have been added to the original sixteen of the first edition. The most recent, Chapter 22 Nanophotonics, describes the progression from micrometer-sized elements to those with dimensions on the order of nanometers, such as quantum wires, quantum dots and photonic crystals.
I have been fortunate to be able to visit China, first in 1985 and later in 2006, to discuss progress in integrated optics with professors and students from a number of universities. They were very gracious hosts, and I formed many solid friendships, particularly with Professor Shuqi Liu and Professor Yutang Ye at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China UESTC in Chengdu. Also I was very pleased to learn that Professor Yutang Ye and his colleague Dr. Jianfeng Li, of that university, had been chosen to manage the translation procedure and quality for this edition. I have enjoyed working with them to facilitate its production. Because of the publication of the Chinese version of my book, I believe that there will be more readers in China. The efforts the translators and China Publishing House of Electronics Industry have made are sincerely appreciated.
