“With the signing of the Declaration of
Independence in 1776, the term “Colonial” ceases to be appropriate. Design
produced from about 1780 until 1830 is usually described as belonging to the
Federal period. In stylistic terms, the tendency of the Federal period was to
move toward an increasingly strict version of classicism based on sophisticated
awareness of the published works of Renaissance authorities, such as Palladio
and Serlio, and on knowledge of actual classical building.” (A History of Interior Design)
The main stream
of this period is neoclassic style. Although the United States gained political
independence through the War of Independence, , the United States and Europe
still remained consistent in interior decoration. The Neoclassical Movement was
synchronous as Europe. Books of detailed measured drawings made at archeological
sites, such as the multivolume Antiquities
of Athens by James Stuart and Nicholas Revet, pushed the movement toward
Neoclassicism---and Greek rather than Roman precedents---that was also
developing in Europe at this time.
Furniture
of the early federal period is dominated by the styles of Hepplehite and
Sheraton, and its design tended toward the delicate and straight-lined forms.
With decorative details using motifs like shell, leaf, flower, etc. The later Federal Period favored heavier, more massive forms with
carved ornament elements like claws, lion’s paw feet, curule X-form chair
backs, etc.
